Connemara Maths Academy were honoured to host the Mathletes Ireland First Reunion on Saturday 16th August 2014.
Mathletes arrived at 9.30 for registration and at 10am were taking on their first challenge with the weather holding up and the rain staying away for the whole day!.
This challenge involved all Mathletes forming a perfect circle and with their mobile devices attempted to create a 360 degree pan exploring the Fibonacci sequence and the Golden Ratio.
A focus on circles, discovering Pi, Fibonacci, Number Theory and Coordinate Geometry was the order of the day while concepts were explored with 3D Modelling, Music Technology and Film Production and of course with Maths Workshops and Adventure Activities.
Some of the Mathletes were at Adventure Activities while others were in Maths Workshops with Aidan and Aisling.
Adventure Activities included Rock Climbing & Abseiling, Archery & the very popular Assault Course:
Even our Sponsor and Founder of Mathletes Ireland, Séan O’Sullivan of SOS Ventures had a go!
Mathletes used GoPro cameras to make the following Adventure Activity Film:
Mathletes also had a very short time to film and produce a 1 minute film exploring the exponential growth in the number of photos taken since the 1820s. Ray went through the project with the Mathletes…
while also going through the technology of lenses, cameras and film…
Mathletes also go to use the camera for tracking shots…
before going out and shooting the film…
Mathletes also had Music Technology workshops exploring Frequency and Sound and using 2D Coordinate Geometrical spaces to write music..
Mathletes were able to draw curves and graphs based on the frequency of the sound they heard!
Mathletes had the opportunity to use iPads to make music and perform a live sound track to the Film Project at the presentation.
Mathletes explored geometrical 3D Shapes in 3D Modelling…
The final cut of the Film Project was presented to parents with Mathletes performing the sound track live to the screening. Mathletes performed on Coordinate Geometry inspired iPad apps with Frequency being one of the variables. The apps used were Soundrop:
and Virtual ANS where Mathletes experienced lines, slopes and curves in a Frequency v Time Coordinate Plane:

Overall Mathletes packed in a full schedule where they had a great interconnected mix of Adventure Activities, Creative Technologies and Maths Concept Discovery and were an absolute joy to have for the day. Connemara Maths Academy teachers and staff all commented on what a marvellous group they were and everyone at CMA would like to thank the Mathletes for their efforts on the day. Frankie at The Lilliput Adventure Centre and his great staff were brilliant and we would like to thank them most sincerely for all their hard work and good humour.
Connemara Maths Academy would also like to thank the Mathletes Challenge Ireland’s Séan O’Sullivan and Kelly Kirkpatrick for inviting us to host the event and we are very much looking forward to working with the Mathletes again soon.
Just a note to any Mathletes out there reading this: Don’t forget to send us the video footage for the Mobile Film Device Project. We still haven’t received all the files yet and we can’t complete the project without them! Email the files to aengus@connemaramathsacademy.com or upload onto Social Media (Twitter @project_maths, Facebook Connemara Maths Academy or Google+ ConnemaraMathsAcademyIreland).
